NFB of North Carolina State Convention
The 2014 State Convention is coming in September. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Raleigh. Come and join us.
September 18 through 21, 2014

$69.00 (plus 12.75% Tax). To get the convention rate, reservations must be made by September 4, 2014. Prices are subject to change after September 4, 2014. The Group code for those wishing to make online reservations is NFB.

The hosting Chapter, Wake County, wants to make this State Convention one to remember. To that end, they are changing things around and stirring things up!
The following van arrangements are available for registered participants to travel to events and bus or train stations:
9-18: Two vans from 3 to 11 PM
9-19: Two vans from 11 AM to 7 PM
9-20: One van from 12 to 6 PM
9-21: One van from 11 AM to 3 PM
Use the Raleigh Para-Transit program if you use Para-Transit services in your home location. Make prior arrangements with your local providers.
The hotel offers free shuttle service within a few miles of the hotel and to and from the airport. You may contact James Benton for info or to make reservations at 919-740-2398 or 919-755-0700.
A visit to a bell ringing practice at a local church will be offered Thursday evening. A tour of the State Capitol and a tour of the Natural Science Museum will be offered Friday afternoon. The Friday afternoon tours have a minimum number of participants so reservations are essential. Call James Benton at (919) 740-2398 or (919) 755-0700 for more details or to make a reservation. We will need to let the local Chapter know the things we want to do in order to help them plan for the events!
A Bluegrass concert will be offered during the dinner hour on Friday. We will have a business session at 7 PM on Friday, September 19 and hear reports from the Division of Services for the Blind, NC Central University, the Governor Morehead School, and the NC Library for the Blind. We will have a Talent Show after these reports. Call Robert Parrish for details at (919) 832-1226.
The Wake Chapter will have a Silent Auction during the Convention. Beginning on Friday at lunch, the Silent Auction items will be shown in the Board Room at the same hours as the Hospitality room is open. winners will be announced after the speech on Saturday night.
Our National Rep will do special sessions at the hotel Friday morning and Saturday during lunch. Everyone is URGED to either come to the hotel Thursday night or to be at the hotel by 8 AM on Friday morning. This is our way of "cramming" more and more into a jam-packed schedule!
Informative workshops will be offered Friday afternoon on bird watching, Political Advocacy, the inner workings of the NC Legislature, and the new braille code & braille technology, . Contact Miriam dixon at (919) 602-8715 for details or to ask questions.
On Saturday, beginning at 9:00 AM and running to 11:30 AM we will hear reports and other important information.
Boyce Locklear , our State Treasurer, and Sharon Weddington, our State Secretary, will hold their annual Chapter Admin Session Saturday from 11:30 AM to Noon. All Chapters are URGED to send a rep to this meeting.
Our Students Division will hold its business session during lunch on Saturday.
We will have our Vender Hall from 2 PM to 5 PM on Saturday.
NFB of NC will host a technology demo and Q&A session from 2 PM to 5 PM on Saturday in the Whozit Membership Hall (Wakefield Ballroom). Do you have screen reader questions? Do you want to know how to find specific information using your iOS device? Have you always wanted to get your hands on a certain piece of software without the noise of an exhibition hall and with a knowledgeable user at your disposal? This session is for you. We’ll have seasoned users of JAWS, Window-Eyes, System Access, NVDA, VoiceOver, and more available to answer your questions or clear up difficulties. No appointment is necessary, and you’re welcome to stay as long as you like but do not forget to ask more questions in the vendor hall. We will work hard to be sure that everyone who shows up does get at least one question answered or demonstration. Jeremiah Rogers will run this session.
Saturday night, beginning at 7 PM, the NFB of NC will partake of a grand meal, and hear a rousing speech from our National Rep. We will award the Robert & Hazel Staley Scholarship, announce drawing winners, announce the Silent Auction winners,and present the Catawba County charter. We will also hold our annual Pledge drive.
After the banquet, there will be an dance.
We will have a non denominational church service on Sunday morning from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM.
On Sunday morning, from 9:00 AM to around Noon, we will have our Annual Business meeting.
